Jewelry exceeds expectations at Bonhams auction
A diamond rivière necklace and a turn-of-the-century brooch featuring imperial topaz were among the top lots of the auction, held Monday in New York.

New York--A diamond rivière necklace boasting nearly 80 carats in total sold for $1.2 million at Bonhams Fine Jewelry sale held in New York on Monday, helping to bring the auction’s total to $3.8 million.
“This was one of many pieces in the auction that exemplified connoisseurship,” said Susan Abeles, director of fine jewelry at Bonhams U.S. “The necklace--which is similar to the one that Beyoncé wore at the Oscars after-party--shows that round diamonds are storming back into fashion.”
Gemstones also were highly sought after at the sale, Bonhams said, with an imperial topaz and diamond brooch selling for more than nine times its pre-sale high estimate at $87,500 and a pair of emerald and diamond earrings doubling its pre-sale estimate, bringing in $118,750.
“Buyers know quality when they see it and this auction shone with exquisite pieces that were fought over by bidders from around the world,” Abeles said.
