JSA Warns of Sneak Thief in the Southeast
The suspect recently made off with a gold chain from a store in Georgia, the Jewelers Security Alliance said.
Columbus, Ga.--A man suspected in a string of sneak thefts across the southeastern United States two years ago is at it again, the Jewelers Security Alliance said.
In an alert issued last week, the JSA said a male suspect entered a jewelry store in Columbus, Georgia, at 3:15 in the afternoon on March 18. He asked to see multiple items, flashed a lot of cash and made a quick decision on the items he asked to see.
When he got to the register, he said he needed to get something out of his car, but he never returned. Store associates discovered that he had stolen a gold chain.
The same man is suspected of pulling off a similar theft two days earlier at a store in Albany, Georgia.
The JSA said it issued a warning about this suspect in February 2016 when, it is believed, he carried out sneak thefts in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Florida.
The suspect is described as being in his 70s, between 6 feet 2 inches and 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 220 pounds and having a salt-and-pepper moustache. He always wears a suit and hat, and has sunglasses hanging from the pocket of his shirt or jacket.
To avoid sneak thefts, the JSA recommends showing only one item at a time and not leaving showcases open after taking out or returning jewelry.
