Sauer Embraces Emptiness Through ‘Ma’ Collection
The collection pays tribute to the Japanese philosophy of Ma, studying balance, stillness, and the interplay between presence and absence.

The collection, designed by creative director Stephanie Wenk, is an exploration of emptiness as the moment where stillness brings order and harmony out of chaos.
Ma is the awareness and appreciation of “the pause,” the practice of allowing time to take its course so that life fits perfectly between everything and nothing, the brand said.
“I see emptiness as an essential element, capable of shaping an object, and idea. It’s not just an absence, but a breathing space, and interval that allows forms and meaning to reveal themselves,” said Wenk.
“This interval is not a vacuum, but a window open to infinite possibilities. The role of emptiness is inescapable. And with it comes an organized mind, a state of tranquility, and a deep reverence for the moment when meaning takes shape.”
Wenk translated this concept into jewelry through design elements embracing balance, stillness, and the interplay between presence and absence.
Her designs echo Zen gardens, river pebbles, and rippling water through rings, necklaces, and earrings crafted with diamonds, emerald, onyx, horn, pebble stones, and 18-karat yellow gold.
The collection also reflects on yin-yang harmony as black and white meet in pieces featuring black quartz and pearls. Meanwhile, diamonds “read the air and give emptiness the necessary time to make sense,” said the brand.
According to Sauer, Ma is meant to be not only a jewelry offering, but an invitation to contemplate the universe that dwells in the spaces between.
Inspiration was drawn from Japanese culture, spanning from philosophy and spirituality to aesthetics and art.
The brand looked to the practice of balancing stones, mochi pastries, Shōji rice paper panels, Ikebana art, Hiroshi Sugimoto’s monochrome photography, Tadao Ando’s architecture, and the meditative qualities of Buddhist practices.
“The Cartesian certainties of Western reasoning dissolve in the intuitive practices of the East, and it is from this meeting that a collection is born that does not seek to define but to propose new ways of integrating the Ma into reality,” said the brand.
The Ma collection debuted during the international art fair SP-Arte in São Paulo on Apr. 2.
It is available in store and on the Sauer website.
Pieces from the collection will be available at Sauer’s New York City location in early May. This store, the brand’s first location outside of Brazil, opened on Madison Avenue in November 2024.
