Palm Beach, Fla.--A watch thief in Palm Beach has been arrested and sent to jail after a diligent jeweler recognized it as belonging to a fellow jeweler and friend.
William Dublynn, 32, of Misty Ridge Way in Boynton Beach, Fla. was arrested on Aug. 18 and faces robbery and aggravated battery charges.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office would not release the original police report to National Jeweler as the case remains under investigation. However, reports from the Sun Sentinel, the daily newspaper covering Broward and South Palm Beach counties, state that Dublynn is suspected of approaching a jeweler who was sitting in his car in a West Boca shopping center parking lot and punching him in the head before stealing his gold Rolex Daytona.
Three days later, Dublynn sold the stolen watch at Jewels of Time in Boca Raton. The jeweler at that store agreed to buy the watch and gave Dublynn a check for $19,500.
According to the Sun Sentinel, minutes after Dublynn left, another employee at the store recognized the Rolex as belonging to a jeweler friend of his, and checked the serial numbers of the watch that Dublynn had sold them against that of the Rolex that had been reported as stolen.
They matched, and the police were alerted.
When Dublynn walked into a Northern Trust Bank in Miami and tried to cash the check from the jeweler, bank tellers saw a hold had been placed on the note and called police. He ran from the bank, leaving behind his driver’s license and social security card.
A warrant was issued and Miami-Dade County police tracked Dublynn down on July 11. He remains in Palm Beach County jail without bail.
