Granada Hills, Calif.--Sam Spiegel, founder of manufacturer Caretta Inc. and the Jewelry Factory retail store, died Nov. 26 in California. He was 93.
A World War II veteran, Spiegel’s career in the jewelry industry started in the 1960s, when he represented Gold Jewelry Novelty Co. and Pacific Gem Cutters.
In 1975, Spiegel established Caretta. His zest for life, sense of humor and love of people made him a legend among the early “road warriors” of the fine jewelry industry in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas, also known as the TOLA region, as well as across the nation.
Spiegel was a member of the 24 Karat Club and was a supporter of a number of charitable organizations, including City of Hope, a California-based cancer hospital and research center.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Etta; brother- and sister-in-law Jerry and Martha Spiegel; daughter- and son-in-law Caren Spiegel Lake and Walter Lake; son- and daughter-in-law Bruce and Zeda Dallas Spiegel; son- and daughter-in-law Andy and Dianna Aaronson Spiegel; nephew Michael Spiegel; three grandchildren; and a pup named Misty.
Services took place Friday in Granada Hills. Donations in Spiegel’s honor may be made to City of Hope.
