New York--Designer Shaun Leane’s “Diamond Glove” is on display for the first time in the United States at the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis as part of an exhibition that will run through April 18.
“A Queen Within: Adorned Archetypes, Fashion and Chess” highlights queen archetypes in fashion and uses artistic mediums to tell the story of the queen’s evolving role in chess and society.
The exhibition includes pieces from radical and experimental designers, including Leane, Alexander McQueen, Jordan Askill, Iris Van Herpen and Gianfranco Ferre, among many others.
The Diamond Glove, which Leane made in collaboration with fashion designer Daphne Guinness, is 18-karat white gold and platinum with more than 5,000 white pavé diamonds.
Sofia Hedman, fashion curator and exhibition designer, is the curator of A Queen Within.
“There is something fascinating about the game of chess and the queen’s role within it. She breaks the rules. She does what she wants on the board. When we began to research how this kind of thinking has an influence on fashion, and specifically among the private collection pieces that became the starting point for the show, we knew that there was an important story to tell,” Hedman said.
Additional information on the exhibition can be found on the World Chess Hall of Fame website.
