Diamond manufacturer gives millions for hospital

Mumbai--The shareholders of Hari Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd., a De Beers Group sightholder and diamond and jewelry manufacturer, have earmarked some funds for a very important and altruistic purpose.
The company has pledged Rs. 15 crore (about $2.4 million) for a hospital project in Surat, a major hub for diamond polishing and one of the largest cities in the Indian state of Gujarat. Gujarat is north of Maharashtra, the state where Mumbai is located.
The bulk of Hari Krishna Exports’ contribution came from Savjibhai Dholakiya, the company’s chairman. He said at the ground-breaking ceremony for the project that he was happy to participate in a project that will bring much-needed aid to the people of Gujarat.
Named Kiran Hospital, the facility will be located in Surat’s Katargam area. It will be 13 stories tall with a helipad (helicopter landing pad) on the roof and its own air ambulance. In addition, the hospital will offer a health insurance plan for families and will serve people belonging to all communities.
The cost of constructing the facility will be Rs. 500 crore (about $80 million) and possibly will be the largest hospital of its kind, Hari Krishna Exports said in a news release about the project. A total of Rs. 300 crore (about $48 million) has been raised for its construction to date, and it is expected the hospital will be ready to open in about two years.
Headquartered in Mumbai, Hari Krishna Exports took home two awards earlier this year at the Gem & Jewellery Promotion Export Council’s (GJEPC) 40th annual Gem & Jewellery Awards. The company won for most innovative company while H.K. Designs (India), a marketing affiliate of Hari Krishna Exports, was named emerging performer of the year.
