Rio Tinto recently reported a double-digit drop in diamond production last year as compared with 2013. Output decreased by 13 percent, dropping from 16 million carats in 2013 to 13.9 million carats in 2014.
The Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia saw the greatest decline in output last year, which Rio Tinto said is due to the transition from an open pit to an underground mine as well as the processing of lower grade ore as underground production ramps up.
