Strength Is Sharpened Into Beauty in Kris Averi’s ‘Prism Thorn’ Ring
The rainbow version of the ring, our Piece of the Week, features angel-cut, octahedral lab-grown sapphires designed to be worn as armor.

Kris Averi’s “Prism Thorn” ring was crafted as a little piece of armor for the wearer.
It was inspired by prisms, pyramids, and the protective power of thorns, which is reflected by the gemstones that the ring centers.
The rainbow version of the design features angel-cut, octahedral, lab-grown flame fusion sapphires in a ROYGBIV colorway that are reverse-set.
Kris Averi Founder and Creative Director Kris Harvey worked with lapidarist Oke Millett to create the Prism Thorn ring.
Millett, who is deeply inspired by period Burmese jewelry, custom-cut the gemstones in Thailand to be angel-shaped octahedrons.
He cut the stones into calibrated, true octahedrons that resulted in the depth of color seen in each sapphire because the pavilion and pointed underside are preserved rather than flattened, explained Harvey, which is the natural crystal form of spinel and diamond.
Harvey described the rainbow sapphires as “compressed light until the sun finds them.”
“What most people don't realize is how technically demanding it is to cut an octahedron calibrated well enough to actually sit in a setting. Oke brought both that mastery and the manufacturing to bring the ring to life, while my job was to build and design around what those stones deserve.”
Once Millett finished the stones, Harvey designed the setting and fabricated the rings with the intention of forming a crown of rainbow sapphires that refracts light in every direction.
“For Pride, that felt exactly right as a celebration of light fractured into a full spectrum, worn as armor like thorns or punk spikes. That's queer joy to me, and that is what we made.”
Our Piece of the Week version of the Prism Thorn ring is crafted in sterling silver, however, it is also available in 14-karat yellow or white gold.
Kris Averi also offers another version of its Prism Thorn ring with black spinel as these stones are protective and powerful while the rainbow spinel reference joy, visibility, and celebration.
The Prism Thorn rings debuted on June 16 and are available on the Kris Averi website.
Harvey is donating 25 percent of the profits from the two versions of the ring to Heritage of Pride through June 30.
Heritage of Pride is the nonprofit behind NYC Pride, which produces LGBTQIA+ Pride events to inspire, educate, commemorate, and celebrate the community.
Its mission is to work toward a future without discrimination where all people have equal rights under the law.
This year, New York City’s Pride March and PrideFest will take place on Sunday, June 28.
The brand is offering the Prism Thorn rings at a special price in honor of Pride. The sterling silver version retails for $395 or $3,975 for 14-karat yellow or white gold.
After July 15, the sterling silver option will increase to $545 and the 14-karat gold to $4,375.
Samples will be available in-person at New York City Pride, where the Kris Averi brand will be featured in the Heritage of Pride’s Pride Guide.
