A Sapphire ‘Stardust’ Ring From Greenwich St. Jewelers
The Latine-owned New York jeweler is marking two milestones this year: its 50th anniversary and the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Founded in 1976 by Carlos and Milly Gandia, Greenwich St. Jewelers was then Greenwich Jewelers and was located on Greenwich Street, less than two blocks from the World Trade Center, on Sept. 11, 2001.
The building the store was in sustained structural damage in the attack, forcing Carlos and Milly to relocate to Trinity Place and attempt to rebuild their business in a neighborhood that had emptied out.
At the same time, their daughter Jennifer Gandia, now the store’s co-owner, was doing some rebuilding of her own.
During a 2022 interview with National Jeweler, Jennifer, then a public relations manager, recalled how she took a year off to rethink her career path after 9/11.
She moved to Barcelona, where she found herself peering in the windows of the jewelry stores she passed on the street and calling home with ideas for her parents’ store.
Eventually, she landed on the idea of coming to work at Greenwich Jewelers when she returned home, using her creativity and marketing skills to help Carlos and Milly get the business back on track.
Jennifer recalled telling her parents, who were not sold on the idea of her working at the store, that it would only be for a year.
That was in 2003.
Today, Jennifer co-owns the store alongside her younger sister, Christina Gandia Gambale, who had a similar epiphany about joining the family business after initially pursuing a career in finance.
They were inducted into National Jeweler’s Retailer Hall of Fame in 2022.
That same year, Jennifer and Christina relocated the store, moving uptown to a much larger, more modern space in Tribeca that won them the 2023 Gem Award for Retail Excellence.
Greenwich St. Jewelers carries about two dozen designers and has six in-house collections under the “Designed by G. St.” umbrella.
Our Piece of the Week, the Scattered Sapphire Cigar Band, is part of the jeweler’s “Stardust” collection.
Crafted in 14-karat yellow gold, the ring has a satin finish with a total of 1.34 carats of flush-set blue sapphires sprinkled throughout.
It’s a perfect gift for a September baby or to buy for yourself, just because.
The ring retails for $3,450 on the Greenwich St. Jewelers website.
