exhibition, which took place at the Palazzo Campana in Osimo, we kicked off the
morning at the workshop of gold jewelry manufacturer All Gold. After treading a
cobblestone street in the town of Fossombrone and popping into the
manufacturer’s own boutique, housed in a 400-year-old storefront, we followed
All Gold’s general managers just around the corner to the operation’s workshop.
All Gold specializes in gold filigree work, and it was an
eye-opening experience to see the craftsmanship involved in creating the
brand’s lace-like cuff bracelets, pendants and rings.
At the All Gold workshop, retailers Vincent Spilotro (below left)
of Chicago’s Arezzo Jewelers and Marc Solomon of Long Island, N.Y.’s Solomon
Jewelers, snapped photos such as this one at right featuring a rendering and finished piece. For the retailers, going on the trip provided an opportunity to connect with their own customers back home, sharing their experiences via photos and conversations.
All Gold uses this threading machine (below left) to produce thin
filigree wire, which is twisted, cut and fit piece by piece into styles such as
this heart design (below right). After the surface is filled, a goldsmith individually welds
each piece.
Later in the day, we traveled east to Senigallia, where we
visited Atelier Gioielli di Sergio Nicolini.
The creations by namesake designer Sergio Nicolini (below left, standing) are truly
unique. Check out these earrings (below right) featuring pink pearls, diamonds and green
amethyst. I hadn’t seen anything before like the tortoise-shell-like pattern,
which Nicolini also uses in rings and necklaces. The effect is actually a carved amber relief.
Nicolini and his craftsmen also hand carve cameo pieces such
as these earrings below, designs that have a uniquely Italian flavor. But the
designer, who has been creating jewelry since he was a child, has lately been
spreading his reach beyond Italy.
Gold designs such as this disk-shaped lo scrigno, or “jewel
box” (above), have received strong interest from buyers in Russia and the Middle East,
the designer said.
