visits in the coastal town of San Benedetto del Tronto (a town unique, our
guides told us, for its concentration of palm trees--definitely something of a
surprise sight in Italy). We were there to visit the workshop of Gatti
Gioielli, a family business where the three Gatti brothers, goldsmiths and a
designer work together to produce jewelry crafted through a meeting of
old-world techniques and modern day technology.
Gatti Gioielli designer Annalisa Giorgetti is a talented
artist, and she hand-renders each of the jeweled designs, like these above, in
painstaking, beautiful detail. The company also uses computer-aided design as
another means of planning the creations that its craftsmen will produce,
including pieces such as these below.

Above right: Gatti Gioielli necklace, earrings and ring in white gold with emerald, blue sapphire and diamonds.
Much of the jewelry is made through the lost-wax technique,
an ancient casting process (molds above left). In a generations-old
tradition, the company also handcrafts metal covers for important books, such
as religious works (craftsman at work above right).
Later that afternoon, we traveled to the town of Fano, where
we met Carolina and Giuseppe Carbonari (above left), the designers behind Venezia
Classica.
The Carbonaris design and create jewelry featuring Murano
glass beads and charms from glass master Vanni Tagliapietra. Check out this
bracelet above. I could definitely see it being a hit among bead-collecting shoppers in the United States.
I also think that link designs such as these would
find plenty of fans stateside, both for their entry-level price points and their
signature Italian style. The chains are crafted from a copper alloy plated with
silver and gold, making for lightweight, wallet-friendly designs.
