New York--A 22-carat emerald and diamond ring called “Tropical Storm” by James Currens took home both Best in Show and top honors in the classical category in the American Gem Trade Association’s annual Spectrum design competition.
Judging the competition, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, took place Saturday and Sunday in New York.
The Spectrum Awards are for jewelry, and entries were judged on a number of criteria, including overall appearance, wearability, quality and consumer appeal in the following categories: bridal wear, business/day wear, classical, evening wear and men’s wear.
In addition, the pieces also were eligible to receive nods for Platinum Honors, awarded with the support of Platinum Guild International (PGI-USA) to pieces created primarily in the metal, WJA Gem Diva Awards (given in all categories except men’s wear), Manufacturing Honors (for pieces appropriate for mass manufacturing) and Fashion Forward Honors (for trend-setting jewelry).
The entries for the Cutting Edge awards, meanwhile, honor excellence and creativity in the lapidary arts, including natural colored gemstones, cultured pearls, carvings and other gem materials.
