92nd St Y Accepting Applications for Summer Residency
The cultural institution is inviting international jewelry designers to apply for the program to develop their body of work in New York City.
New York--The 92nd Street Y, the landmark New York City cultural institution, is now accepting applications for its second annual International Jewelry Artist Residency Program.
The residency will begin on Aug. 22 and end on Sep. 23. It aims to allow international jewelry designers with a studio-based practice to expand their work and engage in research in New York City.
Awarded to one designer, the residency will include housing, around-the-clock access to a private studio and travel to and from New York City.
It is self-directed by the winning designer but will allow an opportunities to host a lecture and workshop at the 92nd Street Y Jewelry Center and meet with various cultural institutions.
The opportunity is open to both established and emerging artists. Applications will be judged by a panel of experts and professionals.
Applications are due Feb. 12, and the selectee will be notified by April 2. Full application guidelines are available online.
The inaugural residency was granted to Swedish goldsmith Göran Kling, from Hägersten, Sweden, whose street style-inspired work has been worn by celebrities such as rapper A$AP Rocky.
“The residency is designed to provide time, space and facilities for research, experimentation and the cultivation of new ideas in jewelry and light metalwork, all while giving the artist an immersive experience in the vibrant world of NYC arts and culture,” Jonathan Wahl, director of the 92Y’s Jewelry Center, said in a press release.
The 92nd Street Y serves about 1,400 students a year via its 60 classes and workshops held in four in-house studios. It is the oldest open studio program in New York City and the largest in the United States.
