Nordstrom relocates full-line store, adds 2 Racks
Over the past few weeks, Nordstrom has made a number of announcements regarding new locations for both full-line stores as well as its off-price division, Nordstrom Rack.
Most recently, the company announced plans to relocate its full-line Nordstrom store located in the Westfield UTC shopping center in San Diego to a new space within the mall. Nordstrom will be moving to the west side of the center along Genesee Avenue.
The new two-level store, which will be approximately 145,000 square feet, is slated to open in 2017. The relocation is part of UTC's “resort-inspired evolution,” according to Nordstrom, which also includes additional mall space, structured parking, and the addition of new specialty shops, restaurants, entertainment, sustainable design features and family-friendly amenities.
Nordstrom’s current full-line store (130,000 square feet in size) opened in the Westfield UTC, formerly University Towne Centre, in September 1984.
Additionally, Nordstrom said that it will open two new off-price Rack stores in California, one at the Mountain Grove shopping center in Redlands and another at The Shops at River Walk in Bakersfield. Both will be 35,000 square feet in size are expected to open in spring 2015.
The Mountain Grove store will be the seventh Rack destination within the Inland Empire region of southern California. The Bakersfield location, meanwhile, will be the company’s first Nordstrom Rack in the city.

Many major retailers, both high-end and mid-tier, have been investing heavily in their off-price and outlet store segments in recent years.
Nordstrom currently has more Rack stores than full-line locations. The retailer told National Jeweler last month that it plans to open a total of 27 new Rack stores in 2014, as compared with only three full-line stores.
Saks also said it plans to open several more Off 5th stores this year. By the end of the year, more than 60 percent of its 118 locations will be off-price stores.
