Piece of the Week: Löf’s ‘The Valentine’ Ring
The ring's design features contrasting lines influenced by work from architecture-inspired photographer Nikola Olic.

Designer Morgan Mackintosh, founder of Löf, often uses her passion for architecture when building new jewelry designs.
The brand’s “The Valentine” ring features an 11-carat elongated emerald-cut green tourmaline set in a curved 18-karat yellow gold mount.
After discovering the gemstone on a sourcing trip, Mackintosh looked to architecture books for design ideas.
She was drawn to the photograph “Dimensionless” by Serbian-American photographer Nikola Olic, which depicts a building with a twisty steal frame and rectangular windows.

“It was the bending steel structure that got me on to the idea of having that sweeping gold structure holding the straight lines of the tourmaline,” said Mackintosh.
“It’s subtle, but that is how I like to draw inspiration.”
She implemented the concept of contrasting lines in jewelry, through the choice of an angular stone cut, curved gold, and the use of negative space.
The Valentine ring, named after Mackintosh’s son, debuted in the 32-piece “Rocky Valentine” collection last month.
It retails for $8,500 and is available on the Löf website.
