GIA Adds Filler Identification to Emerald Reports
Lab clients have the option to request this addition on their emerald reports.

Clients can request this addition to GIA’s existing emerald report, which includes stone identification and lists the degree of filler in the emerald.
If filler is present, the identification will be listed on the report as one of the following: “Filler Type: A (may include oil, wax and/or natural resin),” “Filler Type: B (artificial resin),” or “The clarity enhancing material present cannot currently be identified.”
The service will initially be offered at no cost, GIA said.
The lab offered filler identification for emeralds more than 20 years ago but shifted focus to identifying the degree of filler, due in part to the recognition that fillers can be removed, changed, and mixed.
The lab is now reintroducing the service after noting the industry’s interest in being better informed about the nature of fillers in emeralds.
“GIA is making this change in response to the needs of the market,” said Tom Moses, GIA executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer.
“As trade concerns about the degree and composition of filler in emerald have evolved, we have adapted our reports to those changes.”
