Gübelin Launches Lower-Cost, AI-Powered Gem Report
The Gem Passport is available for emeralds, rubies, and blue sapphires weighing up to 3 carats.

The Gem Passport is available for unmounted emeralds, rubies, and blue sapphires weighing up to 3 carats to have a genuine Gübelin Gem Lab document.
The Gem Passport contains the main identification features of a gemstone, includes species, variety, country of origin and a simplified report on treatment.
It will not list quality or rarity additions—such as trade color call—appendix, info sheet or rating document.
The document is powered by Gemtelligence, a gemstone analyzation tool the lab launched last year that uses an algorithm based on AI to identify the country of origin of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds, as well as heat treatments in rubies and sapphires.
Using AI to determine key traits shortens the testing workflow, specifically the microscopic assessment, and allows for lower pricing, Gübelin said.
“The Gem Passport demonstrates our striving for innovation and expresses our pioneering spirit,” said House of Gübelin President Raphael Gübelin.
“We want to contribute and support the industry, making gemological documents for smaller stones affordable that were often not in the scope so far. Gem Passports are the next step following Gemtelligence. They are an addition to our range of services and are an attractive solution to accompany gems of more moderate value.”
The document is a response to the trade’s hesitation to pay for gemological reports from prestigious gem labs for smaller and commercial-quality colored gemstones.
Gemtelligence allows the lab to perform trustworthy lab testing at an attractive price point, it said.
“We believe that the Gem Passport is a highly attractive and affordable service for stones that, so far, were not accompanied by a testing document from a globally respected lab, giving peace of mind also to brands and retailers,” said Daniel Nyfeler, managing director of the Gübelin Gem Lab.
The Gem Passport costs CHF 200 ($215).
All Gübelin Gem Lab locations are offering the Gem Passport.
