How Men Brought Jewelry Style to the Oscars

Men are taking more sartorial red carpet risks than ever before, with some of that translating to jewelry.

“Pose” star Billy Porter wore this Oscar Heyman ring set with a 20-carat yellow diamond to the 2019 Oscars, topping off his Christian Siriano-designed tuxedo that ended in a ballgown-style skirt.
Los Angeles—Actresses weren’t the only ones to shine on the red carpet at the 91st annual Academy Awards.

Actors, too, stepped out in eye-catching jewels.
Men are taking more sartorial risks at high-profile events than ever before. Harnesses were spotted on Timothee Chalamet, Michael B. Jordan and Terry Crews during the 2019 awards season and Mahershala Ali sported a statement beanie from New York City milliner Gigi Burris to pick up his first Oscar Sunday night.
And as gender-neutral styles become more prevalent in fashion, lines between men’s and women’s looks blurred at the Oscars. Several actresses sported pantsuits while Chadwick Boseman’s black sequin jacket featured a long train and Billy Porter wore a tuxedo dress.
The night’s kookiest male accessory was undoubtedly Jason Momoa’s Fendi scrunchie, though it artfully matched his custom Fendi velvet suit, designed by the late Karl Lagerfeld.
With a less serious and more fun approach to fashion in the air, we can only hope the men opt for more jewels in the future.
Here are the best looks we spotted at the 2019 Oscars.

Stephan James was in on the velvet trend in a custom Etro tuxedo. Jewel-wise, he wore a Montblanc watch and cuff links, a David Yurman ring and a Swarovski earring worn as a pin.

Pharrell easily could have won an award for best male jewelry look at the Oscars. Never one to conform, the musician wore a camouflage printed short suit with a fantastic custom Jacob & Co. Riviere necklace featuring diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds, plus a diamond-encrusted nameplate necklace.
He paired it with a large, utilitarian watch.

Mark Ronson was dapper in a Kyosuke Kunimoto suit with a white piping detail that gave it a smoking jacket or pajama feel. His accessories were less noticeable, but one can hope for more in the future.
The musician and DJ wore a timepiece and cuff links by Chopard.

Oscar winner Spike Lee reportedly dressed as an ode to the deceased musician Prince, replete with purple attire and a custom-created gold, diamond and opal pendant depicting the singer’s classic symbol.
His purple Ozwald Boateng suit, golden Nike Air Jordan sneakers, and Jaeger-LeCoultre watch weren’t even the flashiest aspects of his outfit, though.
That honor went to his multi-finger rings, which the writer and director flashed to the camera. They spelled the words “Love” and “Hate” respectively and were featured in his 1989 breakout film “Do the Right Thing.”

Billy Porter was daring in a statement-making tuxedo that gave way to a ballgown-style skirt, designed by Christian Siriano.
But the actor was utterly classic in Oscar Heyman. He wore a 20-carat yellow diamond and white diamond ring valued at $900,000 on the red carpet.
While hosting ABC’s pre-show he added the American design house’s yellow diamond gardenia brooch.
Later, he ditched his tuxedo dress’ shirt, opting to accent his neckline with a 62-carat Oscar Heyman diamond Riviere necklace, plus a marquise diamond bracelet.

Michael B. Jordan provided yet another successful velvet moment with his midnight blue velvet jacket. The bow-tied actor also sported a couple of smart diamond lapel pins, diamond stud earrings, diamond pinky rings, and a difficult-to-see watch. All were by Piaget.
