The Most Powerful Golden Globes Jewels

Exquisite emeralds and beautiful diamonds shone against the sea of black dresses donned to make a statement.

Los Angeles--Oh what a difference a year makes.

The 75th Golden Globe Awards held Sunday night marked the first major gathering of the Hollywood elite since numerous allegations of sexual harassment and abuse by powerful men in the entertainment industry became public.

It was also the first awards show since the formation of Time’s Up, an initiative backed by more than 300 women in film, television and theater to fight gender inequality and harassment in the workplace, in part through a legal defense fund.

Several actresses at the awards show brought activists as their plus-ones--Michelle Williams, for example, had Taranka Burke, founder of the Me Too movement, as her date.

All this is to say, the latest Golden Globes were not business as usual.

Awards show attendees wore black as a show of support for the victims of sexual assault in Hollywood, but rather than being austere or demure, the fashion statement was one of empowerment and unity—celebrities weren’t trying to blend in so much as display their solidarity.

The dress code was still ultra-glamorous, with stylists using the monochrome canvas as an excuse to pay extra attention to their clients’ jewelry, adorning them in impressive diamonds and emeralds.

Here are the most interesting looks from the night.

Sarah Jessica Parker, who presented at the Globes, wore a smattering of Art Deco platinum and diamond rings and diamond earrings from Fred Leighton, but her Time’s Up pin, which she sported on a bejeweled belt (pictured above with rings), was her most notable accessory.

Several actors and actresses wore the pin. Above is a full-length shot of Parker's full Golden Globes look.

Zoë Kravitz, a cast member of “Big Little Lies,” could easily have won an award for best jewelry look of the night. These Lorraine Schwartz earrings featured over 130 carats of Colombian emeralds, set in black jade.

Kravitz’s biggest competition for best jewels was director and actress Greta Gerwig, who wore a Tiffany & Co. archival gold necklace, plus an earrings and ring. The Gerwig-directed “Lady Bird” won a Globe for Best Musical or Comedy, and the Tiffany statement collar lived up to its moment in the spotlight as Gerwig gave her acceptance speech for the award.

Irene Neuwirth is steadily becoming as ubiquitous on the red carpet as the major jewelry houses. She made many appearances on the Globes’ red carpet this year, including on Tracee Ellis Ross, star of “Black-ish,” who wore these gold and pearl earrings.

Viola Davis sported one of the standout looks of the evening: an extravagant layering of Harry Winston diamond necklaces. The haphazard tangle of diamonds was ultra-glamorous yet unfussy in its styling. Davis also wore earrings and a ring from the brand.

Actress and award presenter Isabelle Huppert wore a dramatic pair of Chopard emerald and diamond chandelier earrings. Emeralds were the dominant force in colored gemstones at the Globes.

Alison Brie was one of several stars who made an impact in lavish neck pieces. Hers was a Bulgari diamond version.

“Insecure” actress Issa Rae looked anything but in this stellar emerald and diamond necklace from Lorraine Schwartz. Schwartz was responsible for most of the colored gemstones seen on the red carpet, a testament to her power as a celebrity jeweler.

“Get Out” star Allison Williams was completely sparkling in this Forevermark collar. The 18-karat white gold, five-row choker featured more than 43 carats of diamonds.

Catherine Zeta-Jones presented an award with her father-in-law, 101-year-old Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas. Like many stars of the evening, she took her black dress up a notch with an incredible pair of earrings. This exquisite emerald and diamond chandelier pair are by Lorraine Schwartz, and were paired with a matching ring.

A red carpet wouldn’t be complete without an appearance from Repossi. The Golden Globes got its dose of the edgy jeweler courtesy of “Stranger Things” actress Mille Bobby Brown, who wore ear cuffs (pictured above) and several rings.

Actress Kate Hudson was a vision in her diamond jewelry from Harry Winston. Long necklaces used to embellish low-cut necklines were trending at the Globes, and Hudson rocked arguably the best version of this.

Octavia Spencer of “The Shape of Water” was glowing in one-of-a-kind Irene Neuwirth earrings, which appear to be made of diamonds and turquoise.

What a coup for an independent designer. Sophie Buhai, formerly of the now-defunct Vena Cava fashion line, who has garnered a following for her sculptural silver and gold namesake jewelry line, had her biggest celebrity jewelry moment yet, when “The Deuce” actress Maggie Gyllenhal wore her statement pearl drop earrings Sunday night.

Reese Witherspoon accepted an award on behalf of “Big Little Lies,” in which she fulfilled two roles: producer and actor. Bulgari was the maker of her diamond earrings.

Saoirse Ronan was one of the evening’s biggest winners, taking home a statue for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for her starring role in “Lady Bird.” The Irish actress opted to introduce a pop of color to her look with an eye-catching pair of Cartier high jewelry sapphire and diamond drop earrings in platinum.

She also donned a bracelet from the jewelry house that featured 28.74 carats of diamonds.

Laurie Metcalf of “Lady Bird” was one of a very few actresses to opt out of diamond and emerald jewelry, in favor of another gemstone: black opal. Metcalf’s earrings and ring (not pictured) are by Lorraine Schwartz.

What better way to fully represent the women’s empowerment message of the night than by wearing independent female designers? Actress Rachel Brosnahan won her first Golden Globe, for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy TV Series, and did so in ear cuffs by Colette.

Actress Jessica Chastain was nominated for an award for her role in “Molly’s Game,” and presented Saoirse Ronan with her Best Actress statue. Chastain, who is a Piaget ambassador, shone in the brand’s Limelight Rose Passion earrings, which featured 228 diamonds.

In a move we’d love to see more of, Chastain also wore a timepiece, the Piaget Limelight Gala, in white gold with diamonds and a black leather strap.

Actress Dakota Johnson sparkled in Nirav Modi earrings and bracelets. The Luminance Casacade earrings feature a combination of various diamond cuts to maximize reflectiveness. Proving that celebrities indeed are Cinderellas for a night who must relinquish their extravagant baubles once the parties are over, celeb stylist Kate Young highlighted Johnson’s borrowed jewels in a close-up on her Instagram the morning following the Golden Globes.
