In fact, sapphires always have had a prominent place in the jewels of history. Folklore says that they can be used to protect loved ones from envy and harm, or even to encourage loyalty.
According to the American Gem Society, Medieval clergy wore the gems to symbolize heaven, while commoners thought that they might attract “heavenly blessings.”
Being a variety of the gem species corundum, sapphire comes in all colors of the rainbow, but it’s the blue that’s most well-known of the group and sought after for birthstone jewelry. Blue sapphires can range in hue from a very light blue to a dark greenish color or even a violet-like blue, as well as various shades of the pure blue.
