September birthstone baubles
Associate Editor Brecken Branstrator highlights eight pieces set with this blue gemstone in the corundum family, a gemstone that’s believed to protect from envy and harm.
In fact, sapphires always have had a prominent place in the jewels of history. Folklore says that they can be used to protect loved ones from envy and harm, or even to encourage loyalty.
According to the American Gem Society, Medieval clergy wore the gems to symbolize heaven, while commoners thought that they might attract “heavenly blessings.”
Being a variety of the gem species corundum, sapphire comes in all colors of the rainbow, but it’s the blue that’s most well-known of the group and sought after for birthstone jewelry. Blue sapphires can range in hue from a very light blue to a dark greenish color or even a violet-like blue, as well as various shades of the pure blue.
Here are eight pieces of jewelry set with September’s birthstone.
This necklace is new in Chrysalis’ Good Fortune collection for fall. It’s available in rhodium plating or 14-karat gold plating and though the charm features blue sapphire crystals, at $39 retail, these necklaces could be a great, easy gifting idea.

Melissa Kaye’s “Hazel” blue sapphire stud earrings are set in 18-karat white gold ($990).
Stuller’s blue sapphire and diamond studs in 14-karat white gold retail for $1,995.
This is the white gold “Mulberry” ring set with a sapphire ($2,665) from Bernard Nacht’s “Vintage Brilliant” collection.
Carelle’s “Whirl” sapphire spiral ring made in 18-karat yellow gold ($3,250)
Le Vian’s 14-karat white gold Chocolatier bracelet features blue sapphires, brown diamonds and white diamonds ($5,147).
Zoma Color’s sapphire, diamond and 18-karat white gold ring retails for $7,250.
