GIA Officially Launches Melee Analysis Service
Clients can now submit round D to Z melee-size diamonds for analysis and color sorting to the Gemological Institute of America.
New York--The Gemological Institute of America announced that it now is accepting round D to Z melee-size diamonds for its Melee Analysis Service, a service that has been in pilot mode since June.
The GIA said the fully automated system can rapidly and accurately analyze and sort diamonds ranging from 0.90 to 4.00 mm in diameter, or approximately 0.005 carats to 0.25 carats.
The service is offered at most GIA laboratories.
The GIA Melee Analysis Service separates natural, untreated diamonds from simulants and potentially synthetic or treated diamonds, and sorts the screened diamonds by color range. Clients also can specify a size range for their parcel, the GIA said.
The system processes 1,800 to 2,000 stones per hour around the clock.
The service ranges in cost from 8 cents to 40 cents per stone based on diameter, with a minimum of 500 pieces in each parcel.
Once sorted, the melee is sealed in secure packaging to be shipped directly to a third party or back to the submitting client.
More information about the service and how to submit parcels can be found on the GIA website.
Lab clients also can email melee@gia.edu for further details.
