Centuries ago, at the entrances to Spanish cemeteries, flags of French pirates and containers with poisonous substances all displayed skulls and crossbones, which later led to the symbol's association with death. How society evolved from shrieking at the sight of death's logo to eagerly waiting for the next T-shirt or necklace sporting it is anyone's guess.
Instead of trying to figure out why and how, I did a little e-shopping to see if this melancholy skull and/or crossbones motif could hook a happy-go-lucky girl like me. It just so happens that I discovered a few pieces I would definitely like to own.
I'm sharing my favorite finds just in time for Halloween, which is also associated with dark rituals and morbid symbols, yet loved by almost everyone:
• Covered with diamonds, Loree Rodkin's white-gold Skull Ring mesmerizes with a pair of black diamond eyes and a single black diamond tooth. It retails for about $16,775.
• Priced at $4,200, Roberto Coin's large Skull-and-Crossbones Necklace sparkles with 1.54 carats of pavé-set diamonds in 18-karat white gold.
• From King Baby Studio, rock star designer Mitchell Binder offers the Skull Spinner Ring in sterling silver with a spinning center that features 18-karat gold skulls for $690.
• Emily and Ashley's Black Onyx Cabochon Pendant has two sapphires in 14-karat gold and retails for $560, but happens to be on sale at Saks.com for $363.90.
• Alexis Bittar Pearl Skull Ring is a gold-plated vermeil ring with mother-of-pearl that retails for $295.
