I began seeing numerous articles about the jewelry-stacking trend about two years ago, and instead of fading away as trends eventually do, it seems to have only grown stronger.
Perhaps the return of the bangle breathed new life into the trend, adding an unexpected accessory—rings. Collections of stackable platinum and gold rings with colored gemstones began to emerge and highlight the hands of trendsetters and followers.
Stacking has now come full circle, and we're back to layering necklaces like Mohawk-wearing Mr. T did in the 1980s. In the famous words of the comedic actor, "I pity the fool" whose open button-down shirt exposes 10 pounds of gold necklaces on their chest; they've obviously misunderstood the art of keeping a trend alive. But those who are donning three to four pendant necklaces of varying lengths are wearing this trend well.
The longevity of stacking tells us that excess has replaced the minimalism trend, but will consumers go back to basics if the economy doesn't improve?
