AGA To Honor ‘Quiet Leadership’ With New Award
The Alan Hodgkinson Medal recognizes gemologists who are consistently generous with their time and expertise.

The Alan Hodgkinson Medal was created to honor gemologists who demonstrate “exceptional commitment to volunteerism and a consistent willingness to share knowledge, experience, and practical insight with others in the field,” AGA said.
It is named in memory of the late gemologist and author Alan Hodgkinson and celebrates his legacy, which AGA said is defined by professional excellence as well as generosity, mentorship, and dedication to the gemological community.
Hodgkinson, who died in 2024 at age 87, was a trusted colleague, generous mentor, and steadfast supporter of gem professionals worldwide, AGA said.
The award recognizes individuals who embody these same values. They give their time and expertise freely, support their peers, and strengthen the profession through collaboration and service.
The Alan Hodgkinson Medal emphasizes impact over prominence, honoring “quiet leadership” and sustained contributions that leave the gemological community stronger and more connected, AGA said.
Nominations can be submitted now through May 19 on AGA’s website.
AGA membership is not required to submit a nomination or to be nominated.
Voting will take place June 5 to 18 and the recipient will be decided by a majority vote of AGA members.
AGA will publicly announce the winner on July 1.
The inaugural recipient will be presented with the medal at the AGA Gala in Tucson, Arizona, scheduled for Feb. 3, 2027, in conjunction with the Tucson gem shows.
