In Midst of ‘Sardine Girl Summer,’ Pippa Small Looks to ‘Flounder Fall’
Her new “Ocean” collection was inspired by Myanmar’s traditional articulated fish jewelry, with depictions of flounder, catfish, and more.

Though it’s “Sardine Girl Summer,” the British designer is casting a wider net with Ocean, depicting catfish, flounder, haddock, pollock, and needle fish, all in pendant form.
All the pendants are 18-karat yellow gold, and each fish is fully articulated to “swim” while the wearer moves.
Small is the founder of her eponymous jewelry brand, which she launched in 2007.
The Ocean collection showcases the work of artisans from Myanmar whom Small has been collaborating with for more than a decade.
The country has had an extremely challenging year, with political unrest and economic uncertainty threatening the survival of centuries-old artisanal traditions and a rich goldsmithing legacy, the brand said.
For the Ocean collection, Small worked with Ko Tin Win, a master goldsmith in Myanmar.
“There is a wonderful tradition of articulated silver fish jewelry work in Myanmar around Lake Inle,” Small said.
“The Shan people create wondrously playful handmade pieces, usually worn in pairs of male and female.”
Her offerings reflect this tradition when she brings three fish together in a cluster necklace.
The seven-piece capsule collection retails from $2,060 to $21,000.
It is available for pre-order now on the Pippa Small website.
Small’s collection follows the current trend of ocean-themed jewelry that National Jeweler spotted at Couture in June.
Brands Zahn-Z and Karina Choudhrie also have debuted collections inspired by marine life.
