Piece of the Week: Harwell Godfrey’s ‘Granny Squares Eleanor’ Necklace
As an homage to iconic crochet blankets, the necklace features the nostalgic motif through a kaleidoscope of cabochon-cut stones.

Designer Lauren Harwell Godfrey’s 18-karat yellow gold necklace, featuring more than 33 unique cabochon-cut gemstones, is an ode to the nostalgic motif of crochet granny squares found in classic afghans laid across the back of many couches in the ‘70s.
Arranged in a kaleidoscope of vibrant and geometric color patterns, the piece uses amethyst, dark mother-of-pearl, chrysoprase, lapis, malachite, iolite, white agate, tanzanite, tiger’s eye, red garnet, red jasper, black onyx, turquoise, white moonstone, grey moonstone, pink tourmaline, green tourmaline, rose quartz, smokey quartz, yellow sapphire, tsavorite, and diamond accents.
It speaks to the brand’s hallmarks of intricate designs, hand-chosen gemstones, and playful takes on heirloom fine jewelry as it immortalizes a childhood memory.
However, this piece is only one part of an era that Godfrey explored in her latest “1975” collection.
Throughout the collection’s five distinct yet interconnected capsules, she crafted a love letter to the contradictions and creativity of the time, said the brand.
For additional inspiration, she looked to the sultry nights of Studio 54 in a decade defined by significant cultural, social, and political changes.
“In celebration of my 50th birthday, I went back to the past,” said Godfrey, who was born in 1975.
“There’s so much storytelling, symbolism, and style in the ‘70s that the era became almost like a muse to me. On one end, you have the sultry glamour of Studio 54, and on the other, there’s the whimsical, folksy magic of Jim Henson’s ‘Muppet Show.’ I envisioned an ode to both, through my lens as a fine jewelry designer that doesn’t take herself too seriously.”
The Granny Squares Eleanor necklace debuted at Couture on Thursday.
It is price upon request and will soon be available, along with the 1975 collection, on the Harwell Godfrey website.
