Piece of the Week: Gumuchian’s Colorful ‘Spectrum’ Necklace
Anita Gumuchian created the 18-karat yellow gold necklace using 189 carats of colored gemstones she spent the last 40 years collecting.

The vibrant station necklace features 76 inches of 18-karat yellow gold adorned with 198 carats of colored gemstones.
Anita Gumuchian, founder and designer of the women-owned, New York-based brand, created the piece to reflect her passion for sourcing unique stones, using gems from a collection she has amassed over 40 years.
Gumuchian said her passion for colored gemstones was inherited from her husband Andre Gumuchian, who would say, “If a stone winked at you, it’s meant to be yours.”
Patricia Gumuchian and Myriam Gumuchian-Schreiber, Anita’s daughters who now run the business, also have multi-stone necklaces given to them by their mother. They chose to help create the “Spectrum” colored stone necklace for a client to treasure as much as they do their own.
The creation of the piece is a symbol of family heritage, explained the brand, as it took two generations of Gumuchian women to create.
While Anita selected the stones, Patricia and Myriam helped during the manufacturing process, as each bezel was handmade for the variety of differently shaped stones.
The necklace includes amethysts, aquamarines, tourmalines, sapphires, citrines, garnets, tanzanites, and heliodors in a variety of cuts.
There are also three carved stones distributed throughout the piece.
A gem cutter in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, carved a cabochon amethyst with an owl intaglio and a faceted citrine with a horse head intaglio.
The third unusual stone is a pink tourmaline inlaid with onyx to resemble a ladybug.
The Spectrum colored stone necklace retails for $120,000.
