GIA Extends Deadline for No-Cost Confirmation
The Gemological Institute of America has extended the submission date for the no-charge confirmation service it announced in the fall by two months, to March 31.
Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America has extended the submission date for the no-charge confirmation service it announced in the fall by two months, to March 31.
The lab announced it was implementing the service after two now-former employees of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the contractor that supports its databases worldwide, gained “unauthorized remote access” to its grading information database and altered the color and/or clarity grades on a total of 1,042 diamond grading reports.
To date, only 297 invalidated reports have been returned, and the GIA continues to urge the return of all the diamonds and their reports to remove the fraudulently altered reports from the market.
The GIA said Tuesday that the investigation into the fraudulent alterations of the reports is ongoing. The institute shared the client communications and information about the changes with the Indian police and, as a result, six additional people have been arrested, making a total of eight arrests in the case so far.
A list of all 1,042 invalidated reports--along with the names of the 19 client accounts that submitted the diamonds connected to them--can be downloaded here on the GIA’s website.
