Which retailers will be open on Thanksgiving Day?
Though turkey day is becoming increasingly popular for shopping, the backlash from employees who miss family time has caused some stores to take a stand against it. Specialty jeweler Rogers & Hollands is one of them.

New York--According to final numbers from the National Retail Federation, more than 45 million consumers went shopping on Thanksgiving Day last year, a 27 percent increase as compared with 2012.
While that figure is likely to increase this year, a few stores have stepped forward to say that they will forego the extra holiday hours in favor of giving their store employees a day off while still selling online.
Fine jewelry chain Rogers & Hollands, for one, said that it is putting “family first” this holiday season with its decision to keep all 76 of its stores closed on Thanksgiving Day, despite the increase in holiday shopping traffic that it brings.
The retailer is, instead, offering special online sales for consumers who are eager to get their shopping started as early as possible.
“As a jewelry store, we know a thing or two about big moments and making memories,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “We would not want to keep our associates from creating their own special celebrations and memories when they work so hard all year to help create those for our guests.”
A few major department stores also have made the decision to remain closed on Thanksgiving Day, including Neiman Marcus, Dillard’s and TJX Companies, which will keep its T.J. Maxx and Marshalls stores closed that day.
A Nordstrom spokesperson also confirmed the retailer’s plan to remain closed on that day, saying to National Jeweler, “Over the years our tradition has been to be closed on Thanksgiving and then to unveil our holiday trim the following morning. For those customers who want to shop with us on Thanksgiving, we try make it convenient for them to do so online. We have an extensive product and services offering on Nordstrom.com and offer everyday free shipping and returns.”
While a handful of retailers will keep their stores closed on Nov. 27, many major chains still plan to kick off their Black Friday shopping deals on the evening of Thanksgiving Day.
Macy’s announced that it will open its stores two hours earlier this year, at 6 p.m. Kohl’s will also open at 6 p.m. while J.C. Penney will throw open the doors an hour earlier, welcoming shoppers at 5 p.m.
Also opening on Thanksgiving Day are Sears, Target and Kmart, and Walmart.
