Nordstrom becomes latest to enter Canadian market

Seattle--Nordstrom officially has opened its first international store, a 140,000-square-foot location in Calgary, Alberta, joining a number of other retailers who have expanded into Canada over the past year.
According to the retailer, the Calgary store is the first of six stores it plans to open in the Canadian market over the next three years.
Other locations and their opening dates include Rideau Centre, Ottawa in March 2015; Pacific Centre, Vancouver in September 2015; Yorkdale Centre, Toronto in the fall of 2016; Toronto Eaton Centre in the fall of 2016; and Sherway Gardens, Toronto in the spring of 2017.
The two-level Calgary store, which is Nordstrom’s 118th full-line location, features the company’s newest design concepts, which incorporates natural light, wood finishes and other modern updates.
It offers five shoe departments, and expansive cosmetics and accessories areas, as well as special services like in-store alterations and tailoring and personal stylists to enhance the customer shopping experience. There are also two places that serve food.
“Being in business for 113 years, this is really a historic time for us as we open our first store in Canada, our first international store,” said Sheila Wooldridge, the manager at the Calgary store. “We’re going to work hard to take care of customers here in Calgary and hope to offer them an exceptional experience shopping in our store.”
The Canadian market has been the focus of many retailers’ expansion plans as of late.
Saks Fifth Avenue announced that it would open two stores in Toronto earlier this year, Target continued opening stores in the country after expanding into Canada in 2013, and jewelry brand David Yurman opened its first Canadian boutique with a Toronto launch last December.
