Company launches skin-protecting ‘smart’ bracelet

Las Vegas--In one of the latest developments in the “wearable technology” arena, technology company Netatmo has introduced a so-called “smart bracelet” that monitors the wearer’s sun exposure and gives skin care advice.
According to Netatmo, the “June” bracelet tracks ultraviolet intensity in real time and total sun exposure absorbed by the wearer’s skin throughout the day through a gemstone-like sensor.
The data does not display on the bracelet but rather on the wearer’s iPhone via a corresponding application, which also can advise the user on how to protect their skin from the sun on a daily basis.
Users can monitor the amount of sun they’ve received per day in a percentage, and the app can notify them when to protect their skin to avoid damage.
The app also features a summary of time spent in the sun, so that users can see when the impact of the UV rays on their skin was most intense.
In addition, the bracelet can suggest maximum daily exposure, depending on the wearer’s skin type. June observes habits of the wearer and, through the companion app, can recommend sun protection for them, whether it be wearing sunscreen, sunglasses or simply seeking out shade.
French jewelry designer and Louis Vuitton and Harry Winston collaborator Camille Toupet designed June “in the spirit of a diamond with glimmering facets.” In addition to being worn as a wrap bracelet, June can be donned as a brooch.
Netatmo did not respond when asked for materials information on the bracelet but, according to Gizmag.com, June is a metal alloy finished in a gold, platinum or gunmetal color with both leather and silicone straps. It is priced at $99. Netatmo said the bracelet will be available beginning in the second quarter of 2014 in select fashion, beauty and consumer electronics stores.
The app will be available for free download, compatible with the iPhone 4S and above.
The bracelet launched this week at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Netatmo was awarded three CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards this year, two of which were for June, which won in the Wearable Technologies and the Tech for a Better World categories.
The trend of wearable technology is on the rise. In addition to devices such as this smart bracelet, a number of tech companies recently debuted, or are preparing to release, smartwatches including giants such
