2 Mozambique Police Officers Killed at Gemfields’ Ruby Mine
They were attacked on Oct. 15, as approximately 40 miners without licenses marched on the mine’s gate.

On Oct. 15, approximately 40 miners without licenses marched on the mine gate at Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), the company said in a news release.
They attacked Mozambican police officers who were present at the gate, killing two. One of the victims was a commander of Mozambique’s Natural Resources Protection Force.
No MRM employees or contractors were injured in the attack, and the site has been calm since, Gemfields said.
Earlier that day, district immigration authorities were investigating suspected undocumented immigrants in a local village. One person was reported to have died while the investigation was taking place.
Gemfields said it believes the attack at MRM may be related to that event.
The mining company is in the final stages of getting its new processing plant, known as PP2, up and running at MRM.
It was expected to be fully operational this month, but in recent weeks, it has been impacted by miners without licenses sabotaging the plant’s supply infrastructure, Gemfields said.
Gemfields and MRM said they will continue to engage with the Mozambican government, and they remain committed to the safety and security of its employees, contractors, and host communities.
