Vancouver, B.C.--True North Gems has initiated mining operations at the Aappaluttoq ruby and pink sapphire open-pit mine in southwestern Greenland.
The Vancouver-based True North said the gemstone recovery system currently is being shipped to Greenland, and the planned fourth quarter 2015/first quarter 2016 extraction will create a sufficient stockpile of ore to feed the processing plant once it has been commissioned.
The planned waste rock removal work happening during the current extraction will allow for the 2016 mining season to commence as scheduled.
The government of Greenland awarded True North Gems an exclusive 30-year mining license for the Aappaluttoq ruby deposit in early 2014. Under the exploitation license, True North agreed to pay a gross revenue royalty to the government of the country of nearly 6 percent on all sales of rubies and pink sapphires mined from Aappaluttoq.
The company also owns 100 percent of the Tsa Da Glisza emerald property in the southeastern Yukon, Canada, which is comprised of 105 claims covering 21 square kilometers (about 13 square miles).
