‘Tremendous Trio’ to lead Sotheby’s April sale
Two necklaces that offer diamonds and gemstones in “phenomenal proportions” will join a historical jadeite necklace at Sotheby’s April 7 jewelry auction in Hong Kong.

“The Tremendous Trio,” as Sotheby’s is calling it, is led by the storied Hutton-Mdivani necklace, which features 27 jadeite beads ranging in size from 15.40 to 19.20 millimeters and a clasp by Cartier. The piece has a pre-sale high estimate of $12.8 million.

The “Red Emperor Necklace,” designed by James W. Currens for Fai Dee and set with 60 Pigeon’s Blood rubies ranging in size from 0.72 to 5.04 carats, and weighing a total of 104.51 carats. It is expected to sell for up to $11 million.
Also in the trio is a diamond necklace by Nirav Modi, offering 17 D-color brilliant-cut diamonds of flawless and internally flawless clarity and 40 smaller diamonds that connect the larger stones, for a total carat weight of 85.33.
The diamond necklace is the first to appear in the Asian auction market that features only diamonds of Type IIa classification with excellent cut, polish and symmetry as main stones, Sotheby’s said. It could fetch up to $8.3 million at the sale.
Overall, Sotheby’s 320-lot sale of “Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite” is expected to total more than $99 million.
Colored and colorless diamonds, natural gemstones, jadeite pieces and other signed jewelry also will be included in the auction. A complete list of the lots offered can be found at Sothebys.com.
