U.S. customs agents in El Paso, Texas, intercepted the package, which would have been worth $9 million if the jewelry was genuine.
Cindy Chao to Make Masterpiece London Debut
The Taiwanese designer will show her newest “Black Label Masterpieces” at the fair, happening at the end of the month.

London--The public will soon get a rare chance to see Cindy Chao The Art Jewel’s works in person.
The Taiwanese high jeweler is making her Masterpiece London debut at the end of the month and will show between eight and 12 new “Black Label Masterpieces,” her most intricate and elaborate jewels.
Chao, who launched her brand in 2004, sells privately through her showrooms in Taipei and Hong Kong, as well as at auction. Recent appearances at esteemed art fairs like Masterpiece have allowed her an opportunity to reach a wider audience of collectors.
Last November, Chao exhibited at the Shanghai West Bund Art & Design fair, and in 2016 she showed at the Paris Biennale des Antiquaires.
Much like TEFAF, Masterpiece London hosts a variety of exhibitors dealing in fine art, furniture, antiques and jewelry. Chao will be one of about two dozen jewelry and watch vendors—most of whom are antique dealers—and the only Asian company within that group.
Other fine jewelers include Boghossian, Fabio Salini, Van Cleef & Arpels and Verdura.

“Cindy is an artist,” said Masterpiece London Chairman Philip Hewat-Jaboor, “and the care that goes into making her pieces and (the) beauty that results exemplifies the exceptional works of art we see across all disciplines at Masterpiece London--whether that be a piece of art, design or furniture, made in antiquity or the present day. We are looking forward to introducing our international visitors to Cindy Chao’s unique pieces.”
Chao said that her 2018 Black Label Masterpieces were, as is typical with the designer, inspired by nature, but specifically as seen through the lens of travel.
“I am thrilled to unveil my 2018 Black Label Masterpieces at my brand’s debut at Masterpiece London,” she said. “Inspired by one of my trips in Canada last year where I was fully immersed in the nature’s endless wonder, the new collection will allow collectors and connoisseurs to experience the world in and through my eyes.”
Masterpiece London is happening June 28 through July 4 at The Royal Hospital in London.
