Wine red shade named hue of the year for 2015
Pantone has picked “Marsala” as its 2015 Color of the Year. The robust and earthy red supplants “Radiant Orchid,” the bright purple that was this year’s hue.

“Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty-yet-stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
She also noted that the hue “enriches our mind, body and soul, exuding confidence and stability.”
The shade replaces “Radiant Orchid,” the institute’s 2014 color of the year, which “expanded creativity and originality,” according to Eiseman.
To select the color of the year, Pantone looks at influences in entertainment, film and traveling art collections as well as among artists, at popular travel destinations and the socio-economic conditions.
Ultimately, Pantone says, its color of the year influences product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home and industrial design, and in product packaging and graphic design.
