Victims of credit-card fraud stemming from a security breach at TJX should feel a sense of vindication now that a ring leader associated with the crime has been ordered to serve a five-year sentence and cough up $60,000 for damages....
Victims of credit-card fraud stemming from a security breach at TJX should feel a sense of vindication now that a ring leader associated with the crime has been ordered to serve a five-year sentence and cough up $60,000 for damages.
Five other people besides the 19-year-old ring leader were arrested in connection with the crimes, including his mother, who has now been deported.
According to The Wall Street Journal Online, during the second half of 2006, merchandise was bought at a string of Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores with gift cards purchased with fraudulent credit cards.
Unfortunately, investigators don't believe the ring leader and his affiliates hacked into TJX's computer systems; the guilty parties just piggybacked on the crime by using TJX customers' credit card numbers.
