These Wicked Jewels Will Cast a Spell on You
For her annual Halloween story, Senior Editor Lenore Fedow highlights bewitching jewels fit for a witch that go from day to unholy night.

Spooky season is upon us and that means two things here at National Jeweler: my favorite Style File of the year is about to come out (stay tuned!) and it’s time for my annual Halloween story.
This year, I was inspired by my lifelong fascination with witches.
As a child, TV and movies were my first introduction to witches.
Whether they were good, bad, or in between, I loved them all, from Abbie Cromwell of “Halloweentown” and Sabrina Spellman of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” to Ursula of “The Little Mermaid” and the Sanderson Sisters in “Hocus Pocus.”
The idea of being a witch and having the power to change things with a wave of my hand was captivating.
In time, history classes would delve into the Salem Witch Trials, and a darker side of the story would reveal itself, along with the lesson that being perceived as a powerful woman can be dangerous.
Curiosity compelled me to learn more about what real-life witches are like, including observing spell circles. Their connection to the natural world, be it the stars or the seasons, is a beautiful and inspiring sight to behold.
(All witchy commentary below is for the sake of fun captions. I have a lot of love and respect for modern-day witches!)
While I’ve not dabbled in spells, the closest I’ve ever come to magic has been through jewelry.
The lore surrounding gemstones is endlessly interesting to me, and when I see a beautiful stone and the way a flash of light travels across it, I understand entirely why ancient (and modern) peoples believed stones have the power to protect and strengthen you.
When I wear my favorite pieces, I am certain I carry a little magic with me every day.
So, to honor these strong women, real and fictional, I’m dedicating this year’s story to witches.

This Chouette Designs ring would be right at home at a coven cocktail party. The “Sonder” cocktail ring ($2,850) is crafted in 14-karat white gold with a pear-cut rutilated quartz set with claw prongs on a twisted shank and surrounded by a halo of black spinels.
This Tacori necklace is giving me major amulet vibes. The 14-karat yellow gold “Allure” link necklace ($11,990) features a cognac quartz set with hand-hewn milgrain around the edges and its signature “Crescent” details.
This limited-edition Halloween creation by Sanct Desiderata is a tribute “to the mystical energy cats bring into our lives,” said designer Julia De Souza, which any witch could appreciate! This cat charm ($650) reminds her of Church from Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary.” Crafted in sterling silver with an oxidized finish, he has mismatched gemstone eyes, gold accents, diamond details, and a pink sapphire dangling from his collar.
These celestial and stunning Jessica McCormack crescent moon earrings ($7,000) feature 0.50 carats of round brilliant pavé diamonds and two freshwater pearls in 18-karat blackened white and yellow gold.

These Cultus Artem earrings ($4,100) are named after John Berendt’s novel-turned-movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” which is not about witches per se but does feature elements of magic. The 18-karat yellow gold earrings feature faceted black tourmaline crystal beads suspended from “spilled ink-colored” peacock pearls, with each pearl set with a rubellite.
What’s more witchy than ravens and Latin phrases? The “Through Darkness” pendant ($2,419, without the chain) by Pyrrha in 14-karat yellow gold features a raven under that phrase in Latin. Ravens symbolize wisdom found in moving through the unknown, said Pyrrha, and the talisman “honors the shadow as a place of insight.”
What a lovely ode to the magic of nature. This 14-karat white gold floral band ($6,720) from Kirk Kara’s “Artin” collection features wheat hand engraving, milgrain edging, and two rows of black diamonds.
This Victorian-era spider brooch, courtesy of Windsor Jewelers Inc., was dreamt up circa 1880, and is set with diamonds and garnets (price available upon request). He would be sitting pretty on a cloak.
These witchy 18-karat white gold Kristen Farrell earrings, courtesy of Windsor Jewelers Inc., are also set with diamonds and rhodolite garnets (price available upon request). They would sparkle just right in the light of a full moon.
I imagine a witch might trap you in this Orogami "Labyrinth" pendant ($6,750) if you annoyed her too often. One too many follow-up emails and now you’re in the labyrinth. The 18-karat yellow gold pendant has a movable rhodolite gem and is styled on a silk cord.
A subtle ode to cats! Cats are a witch’s best friend and a popular familiar, which often refers to animal spiritual assistants. This is an Oscar Heyman cat’s eye alexandrite and diamond ring ($56,000) crafted in platinum.
If I was a witch at a mystical gala, as I often imagine I am, I would pair this Picchiotti necklace with a strapless black gown. The “Flora” necklace is crafted in burnished 18-karat white and yellow gold, set with tsavorites and diamonds (price available upon request).
The Lionheart “Golden Sky” charm ($11,595) in 18-karat gold and diamonds showcases a lapis disc. The disc can be switched out for a different gemstone, depending on the energy a witch might need for the day.
This Cece Jewellery “Sacred Pomegranate” pendant ($9,584) in 18-karat yellow gold and diamonds with hand-painted enamel is an absolute beauty. You’d be the talk of the spell circle.
This Anabela Chan “Blades of Grass” earring ($3,048) in 18-karat blackened gold vermeil features decidedly witchy black diamonds.
Even the most laser-focused witch could use a fancy fidget spinner now and then. This “Hathor” spinning pendant necklace ($2,500) by House of Harlow is crafted in 14-karat yellow gold-plated sterling silver, set with black onyx, red jasper, and white sapphire.
This Sydney Evan 14-karat yellow gold spider charm, set with diamonds and holding a pearl, has bewitched me. Spider jewelry may be a bit too literal for a witch, but how cute is he! ($825, without the chain)
Fly away with me! These 14-karat yellow gold and diamond bat earrings ($935) by Sydney Evan are just adorable.
These Alex Monroe earrings scream kitchen witch to me. She’s heading to her herb garden to make you a tea that will knock your socks clean off. The earrings ($211), from the new “Scattered Seeds” collection, are crafted in Fairmined gold plating over silver and feature a sunflower seed drop, a poppy seed cap and a pink freshwater pearl.
