Since retiring from her run as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and tying the knot with Freddie Prinze Junior, Sarah Michelle Gellar has kept it relatively quiet on the Hollywood scene.
So when this photo of the former teen star at the Los Angeles premiere of her film Southland Tales popped into my in-box, I had to take a closer look.
It took me about 10 minutes of staring at this ensemble to get past a prolonged "Hmm…" There are a couple of styling issues; i.e., chest-minimizing dress on an already teeny girl: not so great. But for me, the redeeming qualities lie in Gellar's choice of jewelry.
I'm a big fan of pieces that juxtapose fabrics with tougher materials such as Chanel's bracelets with ribbon snaking through metal links, and Vera Wang's Spring 2008 gowns with jewels sewn right in as statement-making necklaces.
Here, I like the textural look to the silk necklace. It could easily blend into the gown, but the scrunchy flounce and the quiescent solidity of the pearls make it an entity of its own.
But what really does it for me is the addition of the bangles. All from Amrapali of Jaipur and studded with diamonds, the bangles add a hard edge to an otherwise faux-naïf look.
