Nordstrom opens new Rack stores on both coasts
New York and California are the latest locations for Nordstrom’s continued focus on its Rack off-price segment, with the retailer opening one in Laguna Niguel, Calif. and another in Staten Island, N.Y.

The California store will be a 29,000-square-foot space located in The Center at Rancho Niguel previously occupied by a Loehmann’s store (that chain filed for bankruptcy late last year). The store is slated to open in spring 2015.
The Laguna Niguel Rack will be the seventh in Orange County once it is open. There are also six full-line Nordstrom stores across the county.
The New York Rack, meanwhile, will be 34,000 square feet in size and is slated to open in fall 2016.
The new two-level Rack will be located in the Empire Outlets in Staten Island, making it one of approximately 100 retailers that will be going into the waterfront development built above transit parking and integrated into the Staten Island Ferry terminal.
Nordstrom Rack at the Empire Outlets will be the company’s seventh Rack location in New York City. They also will open a new Rack in Queens on Sept. 10 and a second in Brooklyn on Oct. 8.
The company also currently operates two full-line stores and six Rack stores across the state.
Nordstrom currently is one of a number of major retailers that continue to put a focus on their off-price or outlet divisions, including Saks and Coach, among others. Of the 271 stores that the company operates across 36 states, 151 are Rack locations while 117 are full-line stores.
In 2014, Nordstrom will open 27 new Rack stores in the U.S. as compared with only three full-line stores.
