Piece of the Week: Silvia Furmanovich’s ‘Butterflies in Flight’ Jewelry Box
Furmanovich designed the box to hold Mellerio’s “Color Queen,” a high jewelry collection consisting of 10 rings.

The one-of-a-kind “Butterflies in Flight” box takes design inspiration from Mellerio’s “Color Queen” collection, a line of 10 colorful high jewelry rings, and was created specially to house the vibrant pieces.
It was crafted by artisans in the Amazon rainforest who used centuries-old techniques to create the intricate wooden exterior finished with 10 wood “cabochon gems” set in 18-karat yellow gold-plated sterling silver and an agate handle.
The interior was finished in France.
Butterflies in Flight is a meditation on movement and metamorphosis, the jeweler and designer said.
The collaboration is also a conversation between two creative women—Furmanovich and Laure-Isabelle Mellerio, president and artistic director of Mellerio, the jeweler and designer said.
Both women share a love of color and nature, with Furmanovich’s work often featuring butterfly motifs and Mellerio frequently drawing inspiration from the Italian Renaissance and the cultural renaissance it brought to France.
“It represents a dialogue between two women, each leading our respective house with artistry, intuition, and grace,” said the Mellerio brand.
“United by a shared passion for color and nature, our collaboration celebrates the timeless union of heritage and imagination.”
Each of the rings in Mellerio’s Color Queen collection feature gemstones including tsavorite, sapphire, tanzanite, spessartite, aquamarine, and ruby set in 18-karat yellow gold.
Color Queen plays with contrasts and shades through colored gemstones to create a playful and poetic palette that evokes Mediterranean joy, the jeweler said.
Its pieces combine historical heritage—as it is a tribute to the Italian artisans who helped shape French heritage during the reign of Francis I—with contemporary vitality.
Furmanovich was captivated by the colors used in the collection, she said.
“I got a sense of joy and radiant femininity, which resonated with my work. I was also inspired by the longevity of Mellerio, their centuries-long devotion to craftsmanship and artistry, which reminds me of my own passion for transforming tradition through innovation,” said Furmanovich.
“The butterflies are a tribute to this shared spirit: they embody transformation, freedom, and the dialogue between two maisons.”
The Butterflies in Flight jewelry box debuted in Tokyo in October and then traveled to Bergdorf Goodman for its New York City reveal on Nov. 4-16.
It is available for purchase in-store at Bergdorf Goodman or on the Mellerio website.
The jewelry box with the 10 Color Queen rings included retails for $291,300.
The Color Queen ring collection is also available for individual purchase on the Mellerio website.
