Another large diamond was unearthed, a presidential candidate’s old engagement ring surfaced for sale and the Super Bowl 50 winners got their championship bling.
Blue Nile opened its newest “webroom” in Virginia this week, giving it a physical presence in the state and requiring it collect sales tax there, while Alrosa started developing a new mining site and also uncovered another large rough diamond.
News also surfaced this week of notable stones going to auction. Joseph DuMouchelle announced it will put the ring Donald Trump used to propose to Marla Maples up for auction. Tiancheng sold a number of jewels from designer Kat Florence, including some of the largest gemstones ever sold at auction, to raise money for earthquake relief in Nepal.
National Jeweler and Jewelers of America also released the results of their latest survey, asking jewelers about e-commerce and platinum sales, while the Denver Broncos received their rings for winning Super Bowl 50.

Alrosa has started the development of a new diamond deposit, the Zarya pipe, which is expected to reach a capacity of 1 million tons of ore annually by 2021. The company’s current production is based on 24 total deposits, including this open-pit mine, Udachny.
With the opening of its latest showroom in Virginia, Blue Nile now has to pay sales tax there. Though photos weren’t yet available of the new location, a company spokeswoman said it looks very similar to this White Plains, N.Y. location pictured here.
National Jeweler and Jewelers of America’s recent surveys showed that many jewelers still aren’t selling jewelry online, though some are warming up to the idea, and that platinum sales have stayed steady or increased over the past three years for the majority of retailers.

Alrosa announced its recovery of a 241.21-carat rough diamond from the Nyurbinskaya pipe, making it one of the largest recovered in the Russian Federation and the third largest found at Nyurba Mining and Processing Division.
