Two Cape Cod teens have taken the creepy, crawly jewelry trend of the season to an even scarier level.
TheBostonGlobe.com reported that Katheryn Maloney and Brady Cullinan paid neighbors five cents for each dead cicada they captured. Then, the two 17-year-olds lacquered and dyed the insects before embellishing them with beads and stringing them on wires.
The young entrepreneurs/jewelry designers sell their earrings for $10 per pair, and local retailers are snatching them up.
While I faced my fear of insects and reptiles head-on by purchasing a Murano glass snake pendant on a black silk cord and a Swarovski crystal-encrusted spider brooch, I draw the line at insects that were alive and flying a few days prior to being worn.
