Watch: What Do We Mean When We Say ‘Recycled’ Gold?
Three industry experts dive into the complexities of the material often marketed as an “ethical” alternative for metal in jewelry.
In recent years, "recycled" gold has grown in popularity as an ethical alternative for metal in jewelry, but the term has attracted some criticism, as the material’s impact on the environmental and ethical issues is limited.
Last year, Signet and Brilliant Earth announced in their sustainability reports the decision to opt for the word “repurposed” instead, an attempt at creating more clarity for the end consumer.
But, beyond the nuances of terminology, significant challenges remain in creating a more sustainable and transparent gold supply chain.
In National Jeweler’s latest webinar, Sara Yood, president, CEO, and general counsel at the Jewelers Vigilance Committee; Christina Miller, founder and lead consultant at Christina T. Miller Consulting (CMC); and Anthony Maietta, managing director at C&J Fine Jewelry Makers dove into the issues of “recycled” gold with National Jeweler’s Lauren McLemore and Jewelers of America’s Susan Posnock.
