Pantone Deems Ultra Violet the Color of 2018
Amethysts and purple sapphires are natural ambassadors of the shade.

Carlstadt, N.J.--Pantone announced Thursday that Ultra Violet is its “Color of the Year” for 2018.
The color forecasting institute, which looks at industries from art, film and entertainment to trends in technology, social media and even socioeconomic conditions to determine the color of the year, noted Ultra Violet’s connotations with spirituality and artistry.
The color is associated with the third eye chakra, or the center of intuition and wisdom, in New Age spirituality.
In music, artists like the late Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix have used the color to express their individuality, Pantone said. The blue-based purple shade embodies visionary thinking and originality.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level,” said Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman.
“From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”
Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute Laurie Pressman added, “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.
“As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use color to inspire and influence.”
Gemstones like amethyst and purple sapphires are ideal natural representations of the hue, which lies directly across the color wheel from last year’s Pantone color of the year, Greenery.
Pantone said that in fashion, Ultra Violet is appropriate for both women and men, and pairs well with gold and other metallic shades, making it a natural fit for jewelry.
