PGI’s New Portal Wants to Teach You About Platinum
The new portal will share information on responsible platinum sourcing and how it’s used beyond jewelry.

New York—Platinum Guild International has launched an information portal on “responsible” platinum as consumer awareness of sustainability continues to grow.
The goal of the portal is to educate the jewelry industry and consumers about how platinum is sourced and what the guidelines are regarding environmental standards, social impact and governance practices.
In a recent cross-market survey of 4,300 jewelry consumers, PGI found 72 percent of Americans agree with sourcing jewelry responsibly. The United States came in third place behind consumers in India at 94 percent and China at 87 percent.
When considering a jewelry purchase, respondents said “responsibly sourced materials” was one of the top three important sustainability factors. The answer was in the top three in the U.S., China, India, and Japan.
PGI CEO Huw Daniel said, “Awareness about ESG [environmental, social, and governance] factors and responsible sourcing has grown globally throughout many industries, and the jewelry sector is no exception. Consumers are paying increasing attention to this trend, and in some markets, they are willing to choose jewelry that has a positive environmental and social impact at a premium.”
The leading platinum producers, which help fund the organization, are working to prioritize the environment and society in their practices, including by responsible platinum production and providing local community support, said Daniel, and the platform will highlight their efforts.

The platform will also educate users on how platinum can benefit society and the environment outside of the jewelry world.
As an example, platinum is essential in diesel catalysts, which reduce emissions, and are also vital to the hydrogen economy, which is a carbon-free energy delivery system where fuel cells would generate energy from hydrogen, leaving heat and water vapor as byproducts.
The precious metal also has a place in the medical field, as it is biocompatible, being used in pacemakers and other medical instruments, as well as platinum-based therapies as a cancer treatment.
“Platinum is a precious and rare metal with unique attributes. Alongside creating stunning jewelry, platinum contributes to society and the environment. It’s our mission to communicate its superior qualities to consumers and the jewelry industry,” said Daniel.
