Ann Arbor Jeweler Closes After 35 Years

Ann Arbor, Mich.—Austin & Warburton, a jeweler in Ann Arbor, Michigan known for its custom pieces, has closed its doors after 35 years as the owners head into retirement.
The business, formerly known as Austin Diamond, was started by Jack Austin in 1959 as an appointment-only jeweler.
Brenda Warburton joined the company in the 1980s, and, in 1985, blended her wholesale trade shop with Austin’s existing business as he retired.
It was a winning combination. The business evolved into a full-time, walk-in retail store with a showroom.
In 1987, Brenda and her husband Craig Warburton bought the business and went on to make it their own, renaming it Austin & Warburton and ending its wholesale operations.
The store prided itself on custom-made pieces with the motto: “We craft everything we sell and sell only what we craft.”
Last month, the store announced on its website that it would be closing permanently on Labor Day because they were ready to retire.
“It has been a wonderful 35 years,” said the company in a statement.
“Unfortunately, it is no longer a business that just needs an owner. Brenda’s artistry and skill are not easily replaced. While it is a gut-wrenching decision to close, the thought of continuation with any lesser standards is not an option.”
Brenda’s designs have won several industry awards over the years, including honors from the American Gem Trade Association’s Spectrum Awards and the Colored Gemstone Design Awards.
“While we have been part of so many lives, in Ann Arbor and beyond, you must realize how significant a part of our lives you all have been. It’s been wonderful. We are very grateful,” said the company.
