Week in Photos – April 18, 2016
This week included the results of two major fine jewelry auctions in New York and the news that Signet is moving its Dallas headquarters into a mixed used development called Cypress Waters.
A nearly 16-carat ruby sold for $14.2 million at Christie’s New York this week, making it the most expensive colored gem sold at auction in the United States to date, while the 9.54-carat blue diamond once belonging to “America’s Little Darling” didn’t find a buyer.
At the Smart Show in Chicago, exhibitors reported on what retailers seemed to be shopping for, while more than 200 retailers took part in a survey from National Jeweler and Jewelers of America about their bridal businesses.
The industry also reported on the recent losses of two great jewelry designers--Turkish designer Pinar Öner and Thailand-based James Currens.

In this month’s survey, National Jeweler and Jewelers of America asked jewelers about their bridal business, with nearly half of those polled saying their engagement ring and wedding band sales are on the rise. Read more here.

Signet Jewelers Ltd. is moving its Dallas headquarters from Irving, Texas, into a 1,000-acre mixed-use development called Cypress Waters, but, ultimately, will occupy less office space in the Lone Star State. Read more here.
At the recent Smart Show in Chicago, many exhibitors said that buyers were looking for price-point jewelry, especially when it came to diamond fashion pieces. Read more here.
Award-winning jewelry designer James Currens died suddenly April 14 at the age of 58. The cause of the death is believed to have been a heart attack. Read more here.
Turkish designer Pinar Öner, whose beautiful yellow gold and enamel designs paid homage to the architecture and culture of her homeland, died April 14 after a long battle with illness. Read more here.
The Newark Museum received archival manuscripts from well-known jewelry manufacturer Krementz & Co., creating what it says is the country’s most comprehensive jewelry design archive available to the public. Read more here.
Despite the fact that blue diamonds have been breaking many auction records, the 9.54-carat fancy deep blue stone that once belonged to Shirley Temple failed to find a buyer at Sotheby’s New York when it hit the block Tuesday. Read more here.
