GIA’s field gemologists travel the world investigating mines and collecting samples for GIA’s unrivalled gemstone reference collection. With 26,002 colored gemstone samples and counting, including corundum, emeralds, spinels, alexandrites, and more, GIA’s reference collection only continues to grow. These gems are meticulously documented and researched. As databases expand and more information is gathered, previously held beliefs about geographic origin criteria may shift. For instance, the assumption that orange fluorescence in blue sapphires solely indicated a Sri Lankan origin was debunked when GIA researchers uncovered its presence in multiple low-iron metamorphic deposits.
Advanced Scientific Instruments
Advanced instruments are imperative for laboratories that issue geographic origin reports. As these instruments become increasingly sophisticated, more expertise is required to operate them. This is especially true for certain chemical analysis techniques, such as laser ablation. The cost of such equipment may be prohibitive for smaller labs, but GIA labs utilize the most premium microscopes and spectroscopy instruments to ensure accurate determinations.
Geography Versus Geology
Interesting fact: Did you know that gem deposits are determined by geology, not geography? Country boundaries don't affect where gems form, and gemstones from different deposits may possess similar properties. For example, some blue sapphires from Myanmar are practically indistinguishable from those originating in Sri Lanka. Understanding these technicalities is vital for accurate gemstone assessments.
